Not so SUNY

Week 8:

Playing through torrential rain, Rowan overcame a late comeback from SUNY Brockport last week to improve to 7-2 this season. The Golden Eagles tied the score with 4:29 left in regulation and forced the Profs into overtime. Rowan won the toss but elected to give Brockport the ball first. Brockport's drive ended with a missed field goal and the Profs went on to end the game with a touchdown.

Today in Glassboro the Profs play the cellar-dwellers of the NJAC, William Paterson University, of which the missus is an alumna. While the Profs are still undefeated in their four intra-conference games, the Pioneers are 1-4 in the conference, 2-6 overall. William Paterson is located in beautiful Wayne, NJ, home of the Fountains of Wayne, the store on Rt. 46 from which the band took it's name.

The Wayne area is also home to George Weston Bakeries, makers of Thomas' English Muffins. I remember a series of commercials showing turn-of-the century Britons going to get their favorite breakfast item, only to find out that Mr. Thomas had upped and left for America. They seemed to take the news so bad that I always felt sorry for these poor people. All they ever wanted was some stinkin' nooks and crannies. Was that too much to ask? Was the lure of New Jersey so strong that Mr. "I'm bigger than the whole British Isles" Thomas had to pack up and leave his countrymen without warning, just a sign on his bakery window? Bastard!

Where was I? Football! Once again my high school alma mater, Holy Cross High, won last weekend. The Lancers beat the Chimeras 40-24, ruining Willingboro's Homecoming and improving their own record to 7-1. This weekend Holy Cross has a bye as they prepare for the Parochial Group 3 playoffs.
